Nebraska Humane Society (NHS) Animal Control Officers came to the aid of a 1-year-old Malinois who had been hit by a car. This happened at night when the shelter was closed, so a private veterinary clinic provided emergency care and kept her stable. The next morning at NHS Mia received surgery to repair her torn bladder. After resolving this life-threatening condition, NHS veterinarians noted her pain on trying to stand and radiographs confirmed a pelvic fracture. Now Mia is resting in a foster parent’s home while her fracture heals.
The Doris Day & Terry Melcher Foundation’s grant paid for Mia’s surgery and medical treatments to-date ($3,080). Mia will soon be ready for adoption and a fresh start. Thank you so much for your lifesaving grant – we are all so grateful!

These photos are from two of the colonies we manage. The cats recognize the people who feed them and come out eagerly, though any other time, they try to stay hidden.
They are all well-fed and have good body conditions, as you can see.
In the second photo, you can see a couple of DIY shelters we put out for them. In the third, you see feeding stations we’ve built to keep the food in the shade and off the ground. The shelters and feeding stations are quite subtle and could be made even less noticeable if painted to match the surroundings.
We (and everyone who does a lot of TNR) come up against building managers and neighbors who say they won’t allow these types of structures for outdoor cats to ruin their properties, but they can’t visualize just how inconspicuous these are. In fact, we could probably put some under bushes on large properties and the managers / neighbors wouldn’t even notice.

Jack and Jager have both recently had vet trips for dental check-up and extractions.
Jack joined our Rustic Hollow Shelter kitty crew this year. He came from the Director of Hero`s Haven in Iowa, as her father passed suddenly and he and his kitty friends needed a safe spot to land. Jack is a pirate kitty (one eye) which he has also had multiple surgeries on since his arrival. He also recently had his ear/nasal area flushed as he has been having some respiratory issues and some noticeable weight loss which our medical team is currently monitoring. He had his teeth cleaned while having his last visit. He has major personality and is a total LOVERBOY!
Jager is a BIG handsome FIV+ fella. He`s super shy but very sweet. He was rescued off the streets of Waterloo, Iowa and made his way to us through another humane society we partner with. He has been with our shelter since 2022. His recent adventure was going to his veterinarian for dental check-up and cleaning. Every cat in residence at our sanctuary gets a thorough dental check-up and any dental work, surgeries that need done. Since our cats have many special needs, keeping their teeth healthy is very important to their overall health.

Clementine is a male……..and his condition is also unusual. Clementine has ankylosing spondyloarthropathy, which was a first for us in learning about his issue. It is a rare spinal disease that will ultimately require surgery to repair vertebral fusion. He requires long-term medication. Clementine received funding from other donors as well.

Having just completed our first spay and neuter clinic, we`re thrilled with what we accomplished even beyond sterilization! Having surgical equipment at our clinic means more than spay and neuter surgeries- it also means we were able to perform all kinds of other specialty procedures for the first time!
One of the most surprising cases we encountered this past weekend was a patient named Marley, the sweetest boy in the world who came to us with a large mass growing near his tail. Our urgent care team was able to remove what was a benign cancerous tumor weighing in at one pound! During the course of his care, our team discovered that Marley has a growth on one of his eyes that may be due to a parasitic infection. Our team conferred and decided upon a course of treatment for Marley that would treat for any possible parasites and keep him comfortable as he heals from his surgery to remove the tumor. We’re happy to report that his prognosis is excellent and Marley is well on his way to having the happy, healthy life that he and his loving family deserve.

Phoenix`s Happy Tail
Firefighters found and rescued a tiny kitten, just 5 weeks old, while evacuating homes near the town of Rye, Colorado. After a night at Southern Rockies Animal ER, this vulnerable kitten arrived at HSPPR`s shelter veterinary clinic in Pueblo with burned paw pads and ears, singed whiskers, smoke inhalation, and a very sweet personality despite his injuries. Our veterinary team treated his wounds and cleverly crafted a tiny e-collar from a paper cup to protect them as they healed.
After a few days in our shelter veterinary hospital, with overnights at an off-site ER for round-the-clock care, this kitten warrior went to a foster home for continued care and recovery, growing bigger and stronger every day. Behind the scenes, our team searched high and low for owners, including contacting the property owner of the home where he was found, but were unable to identify anyone.
Now at 12 weeks old and triumphantly named Phoenix, we are thrilled to share that his wounds have healed nicely, he reached the appropriate age and weight for adoption, and he was chosen by a new family to continue providing him with unconditional love!

🐶 🐶 🐶 🐶 4 little puppies needed our help! The first 24 hours contained some scary possibilities, but we were fortunate enough to be able to rule out contagious disease and move towards a neurological outlook stemming from several different possibilities. The quad quarantined at our vet clinic, received meds and fluids and have since split off into pairs in qualified foster homes to care for and log episodes and progress/setbacks. Two experience neurological tremors of sorts and also experience vision and or hearing issues. Two are doing very well with some Gastro related setbacks that required additional medications. We conducted a small fundraiser for their care and are grateful for the DDAF grant to allow us to cover the remainder of it! With DDAF, we are able to provide them with exactly what they need. Mariette is a White-tufted eared marmoset cared for at Pacific Primate Sanctuary (PPS). The monkeys at PPS are provided with housing, social grouping, nutrition, and care that facilitate their innate, natural behavior. Marmosets are very small and have claw-like nails which allows them to grip vertical surfaces such as tree trunks. They use this behavior to harvest gums from trees and hunt for insects. Mariette’s outdoor enclosure is filled with trees, plants and branches similar to those in her native jungles. This allows her to utilize species specific behaviors such as balance on branches, jump and climb on plants and trees, and hunt for insects. PPS is deeply grateful to the Doris Day Animal Foundation for their partnership in our life-saving mission.
